An exciting Halloween project 

The History of Mother Shipton’s Cave.

Mother Shipton’s Cave is a natural limestone cave located in the northern town of Knaresborough. The cave has been a popular tourist destination for centuries, and its most famous feature is a petrified waterfall. 

According to legend, Mother Shipton was a 16th-century prophetess who foretold the Great Fire of London, the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and the construction of the London Underground. Mother Shipton’s Cave is now owned by the English Heritage, and it remains a popular tourist attraction. 

Visitors can explore the cave’s many chambers and see the petrified waterfall up close. The cave is also home to a museum which tells the story of Mother Shipton and her predictions. 

The Task

The organisers of this impressive historic attraction wanted their commission with Timber Team UK to fit with the theme of witchcraft and wizardry. And it’s no wonder, given the spooky history of Mother Shipton’s Cave, and the ongoing witchy theme of their ‘Petrifying Well’. What better way to cook up some toil and trouble than with a selection of our fairytale houses?

Mother Shipton’s Cave needed a selection of magical-looking fairytale houses that were appropriately insulated and fitted with tiled roofs that could withstand the British weather. They also needed several wooden gazebos that could provide shelter both in the winter and summer months, and they needed the project completed in time for Halloween.

The magical task was finished on a tight deadline, and with the darker nights drawing in – it was no simple feat. Nevertheless, our team managed to get the job completed just in time for Halloween, and the finished result went down a (trick or) treat!

The Result

The finished result was a collection of several wooden gazebos and four witches hut playhouses. 

Each fairytale house was kitted out with a range of rustic furniture fit for all the little ghouls and ghosts who made a Halloween visit to Mother Shipton’s Cave.

One witches hut playhouse was a keen favourite amongst the Halloween attendees. These quaint little designs are fitted with the following:

• • 3m x 3m wooden structure in either natural pine or spruce
  • Customisable with roof tiles, furniture, windows and much more (we can even paint your fairytale house)
  • Durable against the UK weather
